Trucking tax deadlines calendar: IFTA, 2290, UCR and quarterly taxes for 2026

Updated October 2026 · By

Quick answer

The next crowded day on the trucking tax deadlines calendar is Monday, February 1, 2027: the 4Q 2026 IFTA return, Form 941 for 4Q 2026 and W-2 and 1099-NEC forms for 2026 are all due. Before then: the 3Q 2026 IFTA return on November 2, 2026, 2027 UCR (open since October 1, 2026, $55 for 0 to 2 trucks) and the last 2026 estimated tax payment on January 15, 2027.

A trucking business answers to the IRS, its IFTA base jurisdiction, FMCSA and the UCR Plan, each on its own schedule. This calendar puts them on one page for 2026 and the start of 2027, the dates that settle tax year 2026. Tell it how your business is set up and it shows only the dates that apply to you.

We refresh this calendar every year when the IRS publishes its next tax calendar and the IFTA dates roll forward.

Each deadline, and what it covers

IFTA returns, every quarter

Due on the last day of the month after each quarter, moved to the next business day on a weekend. For 2026: February 2 (4Q 2025), April 30, July 31, November 2, and February 1, 2027 for 4Q 2026. A return is due even in a quarter with no miles. The tax is settled by the miles you drive in each jurisdiction, not by where you buy fuel. The full rules, renewal dates and grace period are on IFTA filing dates.

Estimated income tax, four times a year

If you expect to owe tax when you file, the IRS expects payments during the year on Form 1040-ES. For tax year 2026 they are due April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. Self-employment tax for an owner-operator is part of what these payments cover. Work out a quarter with the owner-operator quarterly estimated tax calculator, and see what goes into the total on trucking taxes.

Form 2290, the heavy vehicle use tax

The tax period runs July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027. It applies to trucks with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 lb or more: $100 plus $22 for each 1,000 lb over 55,000, up to $550. The return is due by the last day of the month after the truck is first used in the period, so August 31, 2026 for a truck already running in July. A truck expected to run 5,000 miles or less in the period can be reported as suspended, with no tax. Keep the stamped Schedule 1: you need it for plates.

UCR, once a year

Unified Carrier Registration is an annual fee for interstate carriers, set by fleet size. Registration for 2027 opened October 1, 2026, at the new fees in FMCSA's September 1, 2026 final rule:

Trucks2027 fee2026 fee
0-2$55$46
3-5$167$138
6-20$333$276
21-100$1,163$963

MCS-150, every two years

Your USDOT registration needs an update every 24 months, by the last day of a month set by your USDOT number: the last digit is the month (1 for January through 0 for October), the next-to-last digit the year (odd digit, odd years). A number ending in 34 updates by April 30 in odd years, so April 30, 2027. Filing is free on the FMCSA portal. Missing it can lead to the USDOT number being deactivated.

Annual returns and payroll forms

Sole proprietors and single-member LLCs file Form 1040 with Schedule C by April 15, 2027 for tax year 2026. Partnerships and S corporations on a calendar year file Form 1065 or 1120-S by March 15, 2027. With W-2 employees, Form 941 is due each quarter on the IFTA dates, and W-2s go out by February 1, 2027. Without employees, check whether you paid any contractor $2,000 or more in 2026: that is the new 1099-NEC threshold.

The IFTA return due on November 2, 2026

Carrier C is made up: one truck, 26,000 miles in the third quarter at 6.5 mpg through Georgia, Florida, Alabama and Tennessee. It bought most of its fuel in Tennessee and Alabama. Rates are real, from the IFTA, Inc. matrix for 4Q 2026; use the matrix for the quarter on your return.

Carrier C owes Georgia and Florida, where it drove more than it fueled, and gets credits from Alabama and Tennessee. Rates change by quarter; the pattern over time is on IFTA fuel tax rates history.

What the calendar costs per mile

The filings themselves are cheap next to fuel. Missing them is what costs money.

ONE TRUCK, ONE YEAR OF FILINGS

EXAMPLE

UCR 2027, 0-2 trucks$55
Form 2290, 80,000 lb$550
IFTA decals (NY example)$8
MCS-150 update$0
Total$613
Per mile at 100,000 mi0.61¢

Made-up truck and miles. Fees as published for these periods; IFTA decal fees vary by base jurisdiction.

Well under a cent a mile. Compare a single late IFTA return, which can draw a penalty of $50 or 10% of the late tax, whichever is greater, plus interest, and can block next year's renewal. Estimated tax paid late can add an underpayment penalty when you file. Each calendar item takes an hour or less when your records are kept as you go, which is the case for keeping books monthly, as set out in accounting for trucking companies.

Where dispatch fits

New carriers meet most of these dates in their first year, while also finding freight. Our dispatch for new authorities books loads with the fuel surcharge, deadhead and fuel stops in the math, and weekly reports keep miles by state ready for the IFTA return. Every load is offered to you first.

General information, not tax advice. Rules and rates change every year and depend on your situation: confirm with a tax professional before you file. We are not a tax preparer or accountant.

Questions carriers ask

When are trucking quarterly taxes due?

Two different quarterly taxes: IFTA returns are due April 30, July 31, October 31 and January 31, moved to the next business day on weekends. Federal estimated income tax (Form 1040-ES) for 2026 is due April 15, June 15, September 15, 2026 and January 15, 2027.

When is Form 2290 due?

By the last day of the month after the month your truck is first used on public highways in the tax period, which runs July 1 to June 30. For a truck in use in July 2026, that is August 31, 2026. It applies to trucks with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 lb or more.

When is UCR due for 2027?

UCR registration for 2027 opened October 1, 2026. Register before you operate interstate in 2027. The 2027 fee for a carrier with 0 to 2 trucks is $55, up from $46 in 2026, under the final rule FMCSA published on September 1, 2026.

When do I update my MCS-150?

Every two years, by the last day of the month set by your USDOT number. The last digit sets the month (1 is January, 0 is October) and the next-to-last digit sets the year: odd digit, odd years; even digit, even years. Update sooner if your business details change.

Do I need to send 1099-NEC forms in January 2027?

Only if you paid someone who isn't your employee $2,000 or more for services during 2026, such as a contract driver. That threshold rose from $600 for payments made after December 31, 2025. Forms for 2026 are due February 1, 2027, because January 31 is a Sunday.
